Epathetic Concern, Epathy, Sympathy, Compassion 2

But throughout all these years, I've trained another muscle to compensate my impairity.

36 ''When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.'' ~Mt 9:35-36

Compassion, from the Latin word compassus, literally ''with passion'' (prefix-''com'' from ''cum'' =>with ; ''passus'' (past participle) from patior, patī, passus sum => suffer), meaning ''suffering with''.

Surprisingly, with a different origin, compassion and sympathy share the same meaning ''suffering with''.

Sympathy, from the Greek συμπάθεια (sympatheia), literally ''passion together'', comes from σύν (syn) "together" and πάθος (pathos) "passion", in this case "suffering" (from πάσχω - pascho, "to be affected by, to suffer"), meaning ''suffering together''.

Here is some definition of sympathy from wiki:

Sympathy is a social affinity in which one person stands with another person, closely understanding his or her feelings. It also can mean being affected by feelings or emotions. Thus the essence of sympathy is that one has a strong concern for the other person. Sympathy exists when the feelings or emotions of one person are deeply understood and appreciated by another person.

Sympathy not only includes empathizing (but not always), but also entails having a positive regard or a non- fleeting concern for the other person.

In common usage, sympathy is usually making known one's understanding of another's unhappiness or suffering, especially when it is grief.

My weakness in empathizing others is made complete in the grace of the Lord to become my strength (and the most frequently used weapon) in sympathizing others . God has equipped me the ability to share grief, anguish, sorrow, despire, pain with my past. But he has also given a heart (or eagerness) to protect others and to meet the needs, regardless of myself, since I was a child.

As Christians, we are called more than to empathize, but to sympathize and be compassionate to others just like Jesus. The crux is not about your ability to share/experience/resonant the feelings and emotions of others and take it as if your own (empathy), but to have a strong, NON-FLEETING concern to the spiritual needs of others. Are you willing to suffering with others just to meet their spiritual needs? Do you hold onto a compassionate heart just as Jesus did?
